Every other month, our FIU Police host a Self-Defense Awareness & Familiarization Exchange (S.A.F.E.) course for all female students, faculty, and staff.
This S.A.F.E. course is an introductory lesson focused on providing attendees with information, tactics, and options, which are believed to be useful for various types of crimes perpetrated against women.
The instructors of this course are all FIU Police who have been trained by the National Self-Defense Institute.
In addition to the S.A.F.E. course, FIUPD also offers Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) courses. This is a three-session class that focuses on the advanced physical aspects of self-defense. While not required, Sergeant Ramirez recommends women take the two-hour S.A.F.E. course first, followed by the more intense R.A.D. classes.
The following are S.A.F.E. dates for 2018/2019:
- Thursday, September 20th from 6-8 p.m.
- Thursday, November 8th from 6-8 p.m.
- Thursday, November 29 from 6-8 p.m. (BBC)
- Thursday, January 31st from 6-8 p.m.

There is no cost for the class. Only female FIU students, faculty and staff are allowed to participate. Comfortable workout clothing is recommended. Be sure to register at police.fiu.edu. Classes are limited to 20 students.
