Recently, six teams from across the nation gathered in Stillwater, Oklahoma for the Region IV Collegiate Soil Judging Contest.

Among the 2018 team members was FIU agroecology student, Clara Riquelme. Since the contest’s start in 2017, soil team members are expected to identify, evaluate, classify and describe soil profiles.

Riquelme and the other participants analyzed practice pits located in the Stillwater area and observed a wide range of soil properties such as: mollisols, alfisols and entisols.

Overall, the soil judging contest is a fun, educational event that provides students with hands-on experience for a career in agroecology.
