Commercial, professional and scientific divers often need to work in remote areas where they are isolated from hospitals that can provide emergency medical care. For this reason, thorough training of Diver Medic Technicians (DMTs) is critical so that if medical emergencies occur they can be handled expertly.
The Diver Medic Technician course offered by the experts at FIU’s Medina Aquarius Program is designed to give students the knowledge, skills and hands-on training necessary to render life-saving care to injured divers. This 48-hour program provides both in-classroom and hands-on training to address the recognition, stabilization and treatment of decompression sickness and other diving-related injuries.
The course covers topics such as:
- Diving physiology
- Recognition of marine life hazards
- Clinical assessment of diving injuries such as barotrauma and decompression sickness
- Neurological examinations
- Hyperbaric chamber operations
Students will drill using an on-site 72” multi-place hyperbaric chamber. They will also gain an understanding of the operation of a vessel-based Transportable Recompression Chamber System. Upon successful completion of the course, students may apply to the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology for certification as a diver medic.
