FIU CASE partnered with District 3’s Chairwoman Audrey Edmonson at her 13th Annual Back to School event to get families ready for a new school year.
Located in Miami-Dade County, District 3 is home to a dynamic array of neighborhoods. These include (but are not restricted to) Little Haiti, Overtown, Wynwood, Allapattah and Liberty City—where this annual event is held. With the help of numerous organizations, the event provides school-aged children with everything from backpacks and school supplies to free eye exams, health screens and food donations. Local museums and academic centers were also on-hand, engaging event patrons with fun activities to get them excited for a new year of learning.
Bringing virtual reality goggles gave attendees a glimpse of what underwater researchers do every day. The effect is so real that guests were ducking as sharks approached them. It was a great opportunity to see how researching these unique creatures can not only help understand their needs for survival, but also to demystify false ideas about them too.
