Recently, STEM Education Academy students from Southwest Miami Senior High School began the year with a visit to the Modesto A. Maidique campus. The STEM Education Academy is an FIU CASE initiative that prepares high school students to pursue careers as scientists and educators. The STEM-focused dual enrollment curriculum includes learning experiences beyond the traditional high school classroom.
Students participated in a variety of activities including a tour of campus, a RaiseMe workshop facilitated by the FIU Office of Admissions and a visit to the CASE Center for Advising & Student Success. RaiseMe is a platform that helps students in Grades 9-12 prepare for college by earning scholarships for their achievements while in high school. FIU is one of over 250 colleges and universities that have partnered with RaiseMe to award micro-scholarships for both academic and extracurricular activities.
On their tour, they visited one of FIU’s active learning classrooms (AHC5 212 A/B) for a hands-on, inquiry-based lab facilitated by Dr. Remy Dou, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning and the STEM Transformation Institute. Students had the chance to explore what affects the speed of a pendulum and then critiqued the lesson from the perspective of a science teacher.
