The unthinkable happened: FIU beat UM

Everyone will remember where they were when they saw the final score of 30-24 Saturday night at Marlins Park. History was made when the FIU Panthers defeated the cross-town rival University of Miami Hurricanes, the first victory in the program’s existence.

With the win, FIU advances to 6-5 on the year and are now bowl eligible for a record-setting third straight season.

“That’s what happens when you believe in each other. That’s what happens when you believe in yourself,” Coach Davis told his team immediately following the win.

CASE athletes left their mark.

Liberal Studies student, Anthony Jones, led the Panthers with 112 rushing yards, including a 37-yard touchdown which sealed the game in the fourth quarter.

Recreation and Sport Management major, Jose Borregales made some crucial field goals including a 53-yarder which tied an FIU record by none other than Borregales himself. He also received Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week.

Recreation and Sport Management junior, Shemar Thornton, hauled in six receptions with 70 receiving yards including a touchdown by quarterback James Morgan.

While Panther fans were celebrating the victory, #PawsUp trended on Twitter. Here’s what some of the big accounts were saying about the historic win.
