In a memorandum sent out by Dean Michael R. Heithaus, we’ve learned of the realignment of all of our environmental research programs, centers and institutes under the Institute of Environment.
For more than three decades, FIU has been an environmental solutions leader. Together faculty, postdocs and students in our distinguished centers and institutes in the School of Environment, Arts and Society and across the College of Arts, Sciences & Education, have been working to protect, preserve, conserve and restore: water resources, natural ecosystems, recreational lands, tropical plants and critical and bio-diverse species. From the coral reefs to the wetlands of the Everglades, our faculty have been advancing the science and technology needed to address complex environmental issues locally, nationally and globally.
Considering our major advances in environmental science and research from Ridge-to-Reef especially at this critical juncture of global climate concern, we believe the time has come to strengthen and affirm our collective impact. As such, we are excited to announce a realignment of all of our environmental research programs, centers and institutes under the Institute of Environment.
This rebranding will allow us to jointly communicate and report our combined strengths to our various constituents. Integrated, our environmental research program is one of the largest and most impactful in the world. More importantly, our coming together across centers, institutes and programs will enable us to breakdown disciplinary silos, preserving our diversity across the terrains in which we work, while at the same time leveraging our shared commitment to transform our global habitat.
