Sport management students gain experience through Super Bowl

FIU Sport Management Students and Mr. Smith at Volunteer Orientation in November 2019

With Super Bowl LIV taking place in Miami, Fla., instructor and internship coordinator, Nicholas Smith, recruited volunteers for the 2020 Super Bowl Volunteer Host Committee. The tasks began a year ago as students have been working, interning and volunteering countless hours in preparation of Super Bowl events across South Florida. Starting Saturday, Jan. 25, the city will welcome an anticipated 500,000+ visitors.

Senior, Aleck Garcia, has been interning with the committee since the summer of 2019, spearheading meetings and facilitating presentations. Garcia will be the lead Super Bowl Host Committee Captain at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, where he will lead the effort for hundreds of volunteers. As an intern for the volunteer department, Garcia will oversee 10,000 people who are welcoming travelers into the city.

FIU CASE’s Recreation and Sport Management Program prepares students for employment in park, recreation, sport or recreational therapy delivery systems. Fieldwork is one of the most important steps a student takes in preparing for a professional career in recreation and sport management.

Through connections he’s made and opportunities that have helped branch outside of his comfort zone, Garcia feels ready to begin his career once he graduates later this year.

This year makes the third Super Bowl Smith has worked and recruited volunteers to take part in the event. See all Super Bowl LIV events here. For internship inquiries, please contact Nicholas Smith.
