Alumna becomes Rookie Teacher of the Year

Education alumna, Ashley Gonzalez, has been recognized as Rookie Teacher of the Year at Bowman Ashe/Doolin K-8 Academy.

Gonzalez started her career with the Academy through an internship in the fall of 2017, and was later hired as a teacher in January 2018 after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

She teaches students from grades 6-8., in which she says approximately 80 percent come from low income households. However, Gonzalez’s students continue to amaze her through their uniqueness and hard-working mentality. Growing up, Gonzalez had always wanted to help people in some capacity.

“Those teachers and professors that have taught me something valuable and shed light on something I hadn’t once known, inspired me to do the same for others,” Gonzalez said.

This is exactly what Gonzalez loves most about teaching. The fact that she has the opportunity to make a positive impact on the world by just going into work every day, makes it all worth it.

For those students looking to become a teacher, Gonzalez urges them to stick with it.

“It is the most rewarding profession because it is the only one that creates all others,” Gonzalez said.
