Climate change: A threat to Miami

Written by Emma Odenweller

Institute of Environment researchers Jayantha Obeysekera and Michael Sukop spoke to WIRED about the issues Miami faces as sea levels continue to rise. Obeysekera stresses the importance of updating the city’s canal system, while Sukop addresses concerns on the infiltration of sewage systems and the role it plays on public health.

Obeysekera leads FIU’s seal level solutions efforts and specializes in adaptation and resilience water management, climate change and hydrologic modeling. He previously served as the chief modeler at the South Florida Water Management District. Sukop’s research focuses on computational fluid dynamics in cavernous, fractured and porous media.
