David Banisakher

David Banisakher, a computer science undergraduate at St. Leo University, spent the summer researching at Florida International University’s Coastal Ecosystems Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site. He worked with Leonardo Bobadilla and Gregory Reis, along with graduate student Alejandro Torres, to design and build a miniature airboat for water quality sampling. Their airboat prototype detects and avoids obstacles while collecting data on temperature, humidity and turbidity. The data helps researchers collect data and increase productivity when doing fieldwork in hard to reach waterways.

Banisakher is finishing his bachelor’s degree and is progressing in his research career with the help of the REU. Through the program, Banisakher gained experience handling real-world challenges as well as working in group settings, conducting research effectively and managing deadlines.
