Florida’s State University System transitioned to remote learning in response to the coronavirus pandemic. In an abundance of caution, and following the lead of Governor Ron DeSantis, FIU began remote learning Thursday, March 12.

In an effort to promote social distancing, which experts say is key to preventing the spread of the coronavirus, FIU transitioned to a remote work environment on Monday, March 16.

Remote instruction for all classes will occur through the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester, remote work will be through at least April 4 and in-person commencement ceremonies are canceled.

At FIU we feel it is important to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and are planning a virtual commencement this spring. Refunds will be issued to graduates who have already bought commencement tickets.

Spring graduates will have the option of walking across the stage with friends and cohort members in dedicated ceremonies that will be added to the already planned summer and fall commencements. There will also be an opportunity to take a photo with President Mark B. Rosenberg in academic regalia.

In addition, the university has canceled or postponed all on- and off-campus events scheduled through May 10. This includes the Geopolitical Summit and the Our Common Future lecture featuring Sylvia Earle, both of which will be rescheduled for a later date.

In an effort to assure that university buildings and facilities not in use remain secure, FIU will transition to a schedule similar to our holiday closure schedule effective Wednesday, March 24, at 8 a.m. All general-purpose classrooms have already been secured.
