Entering the workforce or obtaining an internship may seem challenging at this time due to the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the rapid change in the last few months, companies are still hiring.
As an active job searcher, try shifting your strategy to a remote career search and be flexible to what is available at the time while you wait for your long-term career goals to flourish.
Many Employers are recruiting, interviewing and hiring employees virtually.
Here are some tips to prepare for this process:
- Perform job searches on multiple websites such as Glassdoor, LinkedIn or Monster.
- Stay connected and network through platforms such as Handshake, LinkedIn and Indeed.
- Update your resume to align your skillset with the skills the company is looking for.
- Attend FIU virtual career events and/or events hosted by the FIU Alumni Association.
Upon invitation to a virtual interview, keep these tips in mind:
- Know the logistics – length of the interview, participants, time zone differences if applicable.
- Become familiar with the preferred interview platform.
- Make sure your space is clean and organized, check your device for needed updates, and use a room that has good lighting and a proper background.
- Prepare beforehand – become familiar with the company and come equipped with follow-up questions.
- Dress appropriately and professionally for the interview.
- Be aware of your body language on camera and engage with the interviewer.
- Be mindful of video lag.
- Send a thank you note after the interview.
Being persistent is key. Keep searching and applying. Your future is at your fingertips and what better way to prepare than being in the comfort of your own space.
