Charles “Chipper” Wichman, Jr. has been named the 2020 recipient of the American Horticultural Society Professional Award. The award is given to a public garden administrator whose achievements throughout his or her career have cultivated a widespread interest in horticulture.

As president of the Hawaii-based National Tropical Botanical Garden, Wichman helped found FIU’s International Center for Tropical Botany. The center is located at The Kampong in Coconut Grove, the only NTBG facility in the continental United States.

FIU awarded Wichman an honorary Doctor of Science on Dec. 15, the same day the university held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new ICTB facility adjacent to The Kampong.
