FIU Baseball trio likely to get another season

An NCAA ruling is giving high-school-turned-college teammates a second chance at their senior season.

Recreation and sport management students Derek Cartaya and Juan Teixeira and Luis Chavez all played at Pembroke Pines’ Somerset Academy before taking the diamond at FIU. Cartaya, who plays second base, signed with Coach Mervyl Melendez at Alabama State but transferred to FIU when FIU hired Melendez in 2016. Outfielder Teixeira was off to a hot start, averaging a .482 batting average – Conference USA’s best.

The baseball team was 15 games into the year when the coronavirus pandemic hit, resulting in stoppage of play. They thought it was the end of an era, but it turns out they’re getting one last run in 2021.

Reporter Walter Villa spoke with the trio for the Miami Herald.
