FIU hurricane expert Hugh Willoughby spoke with NBC 6 Chief Meteorologist John Morales about the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s prediction of an “above-normal” 2020 hurricane season and what it means for South Florida.

Willoughby compares the 2020 season to previous ones and discusses how climate change affects hurricanes in the long-run. His history with studying hurricanes goes back decades to when he flew more than 400 missions into the eyes of hurricanes and typhoons as a meteorologist. Now a researcher in the Department of Earth and Environment, Willoughby studies tropical cyclone structure, intensity and their human and economic impacts.
