Carrie Otto created this $2,000 scholarship in honor of her mother Jane O’ McQuire, a Miami-Dade County Public School teacher for over 17 years.

O’ McQuire’s lifelong dedication to enhancing opportunities for underprivileged areas inspired the “magnet” gifted program at Naranja Elementary School in Homestead. This scholarship is for students with an interest in special education and/or gifted students.

Minimum eligibility requirements:

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time, degree-seeking student (12 credits undergraduate / 9 credits graduate) in education
  • Special education/gifted major
  • 3.0 GPA
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Demonstrated financial need based on federal financial aid standards as determined by the university’s Financial Aid Office
  • Personal statement (500-1000 words) regarding personal career goals as they related to special education and the urban environment
