Hurricane season amidst a global pandemic

With a predication of an “above-normal” 2020 hurricane season and COVID-19 continuing to spread across the globe, FEMA released a guide with plans for emergency managers.

The plan, which included checklists and resources, highlights anticipated challenges and disaster operations along with planning considerations for each.

FEMA is preparing workforce personnel and putting plans in place to support state, local, tribal and territorial partners in responding to disasters.

Efforts include:

  • Sheltering – Working with partners to ensure safety and security of all individuals.
  • Establishing Virtual Operations – Allows FEMA to serve communities after a disaster while practicing social distancing.
  • Inspections – May be conducted remotely.
  • Disaster Survivor Assistance -FEMA will determine the use of Disaster Survivor Assistance teams based on phased reopening of impacted area. May also be assessed virtually.
