
As a new academic year draws near, parents still have many concerns regarding their children’s education and how to cope with the stress and challenges of remote learning.
The Parent Academy – a parent engagement initiative of Miami-Dade County Public Schools – has offered various online presentations which include resources, opportunities and guidance for families during these times.
College of Arts, Sciences & Education experts and researchers were featured in some presentations.
- Laura Dinehart, senior associate dean of the School of Education and Human Development, discussed adjusting to the new normal and how parents can prepare for the upcoming academic year.
- Amy Altszuler, postdoctoral associate from the Center for Children and Families, discussed how to help children stay focused while learning, especially those with ADHD.
- FIU psychologists Elisa Trucco and Matthew Sutherland discussed what parents need to know about the crave of vaping and e-cigarettes and the effects they have on children and adolescents.
- Yasmin Rey, research scientist in the Department of Psychology, discussed how parents can help their children overcome test anxiety with tips and strategies.
