It’s 2020 and alumna Naomi Ruele is still debunking myths about Black swimmers

Naomi Ruele has two priorities: swimming at a professional level and debunking the stigma that “Black people can’t swim” so future generations don’t face the same racism she has.

The FIU alumna was part of the university’s swimming and diving team from 2014-2019. Coach Randy Horner told “New Frame” she was one of the top athletes in the program’s history.

While Ruele was heavily focused on qualifying for the since-postponed Tokyo Olympics, the civil unrest across the United States following the police killing of George Floyd showed the Botswana-born swimmer she too could have an impact to create positive change.

Read more on how she’s hoping to create a space where other swimmers are able to determine their own fate in this feature piece in “New Frame” by Karien Jonckheere.
