FIU’s Career and Talent Development office is hosting its inaugural virtual career fair to connect students with employers in a broad range of opportunities.

The Technical Majors Virtual Career Fair is being held on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The All Majors Virtual Career Fair will take place on Thursday, September 24, 2020, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Below are some helpful tips to succeed before, during and after the virtual career fair.

Before the fair:

  • Find a quiet location where you can actively participate. Ideally, your selected location should have minimal distractions and a neutral background. View FIU Zoom backgrounds here.
  • CTD has elected Highre as the platform for the virtual career fair. After you register for the fair on Handshake, you will receive instructions on how to create your student account on Highre. Take some time before the fair to familiarize yourself with the virtual platform and all of its available features. Learn more by visiting Highre’s site.
  • Research the employers who will be attending in advance. Look on their company website, professional profiles on LinkedIn or Handshake, and recent articles about the company. Also, view their open positions to be prepared to mention which opportunities you are interested in.
  • Update virtual copies of your resume and be ready to share with employers. Before the fair, you should have your resume reviewed and critiqued by CTD. Get resources on resume writing here. Be sure to also update professional profiles on Handshake and LinkedIn.
  • Prepare your brief introduction. It should give employers a snapshot of what you are studying, when you will graduate and what your career goals are. Need help getting started on your elevator pitch? Get more advice here.

During the fair:

  • Dress professionally. To participate in the career fair, you must wear professional business attire. If you are unsure what constitutes professional business attire, learn more here
  • Ask questions to each employer you meet with to learn more about their company’s culture, mission and job opportunities.
  • Take notes as you meet with employers and write down their names. Note-taking will help you not only remember the opportunities you discussed but also help when drafting your personalized thank you emails after the fair.
  • Request contact information from employers you meet with.

After the fair:

  • Send thank you emails to employers you spoke with within 24 hours of the fair. Attach your resume to the email as well.
  • Submit applications to the jobs and internships that interested you.
  • Connect with employers you came across with on LinkedIn.
