Most Wonderful Time
The spirited season that kicks off in December can mean many things to different people across the globe. One thing that unites us all? The importance of getting together with our families or our communities and sharing stories during this time of year. While COVID-19 gives our gatherings a different twist this year, Department of Teaching and Learning professor Jennifer Mirabal offers cross-cultural reads to connect with those who mean the most to you, regardless of age or where they may be and no matter how you celebrate the holidays.

  • Book 1— “Always Together at Christmas” by Sara Sargent
    • As social distancing is observed around the world, traditions old and new are making the holidays special for families everywhere—all with the help of technology.
  • Book 2—“We are Grateful: Otsaliheliga” by Traci Sorell
    • In this season of being thankful, discover celebrations of gratitude from the Cherokee perspective, sharing appreciation for each other, animals, the environment and ultimately, the universe.
  • Book 3—“Queen of the Hanukkah Dosas” by Pamela Ehrenberg
    • What makes holidays so festive? Blending and sharing cultures. Explore how Indian foods join Hanukkah celebrations to make all welcome at one family dinner.

Now What?
Though celebrations this year will come with adjustments, the Miami-Dade Public Library System invites the community to virtually come together for STEAM-driven holiday fun to explore the science of the season with festive twists on program favorites led by the Education Outreach team at FIU’s College of Arts, Sciences & Education.
