Camp Inspire returns

Virtual Camp program via Zoom

With Camp Inspire, FIU’s College of Arts, Sciences & Education will bring new experiences to inspire campers as they explore the depths of the ocean as marine biologists, ask questions as forensic scientists or study the stars as astronomers – all virtually.

How does virtual camp work?
Hosted on Zoom, sessions are broken into age groups and facilitated by trained Education Outreach staff. Experiences include:

  • Interactive demonstrations
  • Guided hands-on activities
  • Virtual field trips
  • Chats with experts
  • Games and more

Once registered, parents will receive Zoom links, schedules and digital resources.

Education Outreach staff will provide mini camps on various teacher work days and holidays throughout the remainder of the school year as well as during Miami-Dade County Public School’s spring break.

All camps will be from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. All age levels will have camp at the same time and will be separated by age into break out rooms.

Each thematically driven camp connects campers with real research and each other to stay engaged while learning and having fun.

February 15: Sounds of Space – There are ways for astronomical data to be represented through sound. Fiorella Terenzi, FIU astrophysicist, has found a way to do just this. Join us in listening to the sounds of space and creating our own ways to represent the natural world through sound.

March 26: Aquarius Journey (Coral Creations) – During this 90-minute mini-camp, kids will have the opportunity to learn about marine protected areas, how science contributes to their creation and the way that community members get involved. Using data collected by FIU’s Aquarius Underwater Laboratory, campers will dive into protecting our natural marine resources.

March 29 through April 2: Spring into CASE – This week of spring camp will offer a variety of engaging activities that focus on different parts of FIU’s College of Arts, Sciences & Education. Themes for the week are:

  • Monday, March 29 – FIU@Home: Mantis Shrimp
    • Learn how these super invertebrates see colors beyond our comprehension. Students will learn about animal adaptation and participate in a virtual game.
  • Tuesday, March 30 – Virtual Field Trip: Discover your Backyard
    • South Florida’s dynamic ecosystems are unparalleled. Venture into the water with scientific instruments such as a seine net to collect, log and share data about animal specimens. The data will be shared via global citizen science apps.
  • Wednesday, March 31 – Meet the Expert
    • Campers will meet and chat with an expert and then participate in an engaging activity.
  • Thursday, April 1 – Forensics Escape Room
    • During this day of camp, campers will solve a mystery together using principles of forensics through a virtual escape room.
  • Friday, April 2 – Games Galore
    • Join us in playing virtual games that range from scavenger hunts, riddles and more.

Give kids a chance to connect with others their age while learning about the incredible world they live in. Interested? Day camps are $30/session and spring camp is $100/week. FIU employee discounts available. Register today or visit more information.
