Florida Department of Health is hiring a Medical Laboratory Scientist

The Florida Department of Health is looking for a part-time Medical Laboratory Scientist. This position conducts work involving independent judgment on a variety of complex laboratory procedures. Duties include specimen accessioning, specimen processing, reagent preparation, clinical testing data review, reporting and instrument operation and maintenance.

Training will be provided to use high-throughput instrumentation and multiple nucleic acid amplification platforms. This position may also be used to temporarily fill positions in other testing sections, such as HIV, serology and microbiology.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must possess or be able to obtain (within 3 months) a State of Florida Board of Clinical Laboratory Personnel license as a technician or higher.
  • The public health technician license is generally available to those with a bachelor’s degree in a laboratory science (e.g., biology or chemistry). Refer to https://floridasclinicallabs.gov for more details on eligibility.
  • Eligible for employment with the state of Florida, including passing a background check.
  • Applicants must be comfortable handling clinical specimens containing SARS-CoV-2 and other infectious agents.
  • Applicants must be able to wear a respirator or PAPR.
  • Applicants must be able to work both independently and with others.
  • Applicants must have good computer skills.
  • Applicants must be able to independently problem solve.
  • Applicants must be able to communicate effectively with customers, physicians, nurses and other Department of Health employees.
