Biochemistry alumna Jill Beaver is advancing initiatives at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a health science policy analyst. She currently focuses on stakeholder and congressional engagement, international policy, and sharing information about achievements and initiatives with the National Institute on Aging. Prior to this current role, Beaver served as a 2017-2019 AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at NIH.

As a student at FIU, Beaver researched the mechanisms of DNA repair that mediate the DNA repeat expansions associated with human neurodegenerative diseases. Under the mentorship of Yuan Liu, Beaver identified pathways of DNA repair and interactions between key repair proteins and cofactors that help cells combat the repeat expansions that lead to the onset of disease.

The research Beaver completed in Liu’s lab and the experience she gained in communicating complex scientific research to a variety of audiences have been instrumental in her current role.
